The road to parenthood, including pregnancy and the postpartum period, can be seasons of life full of complex emotions. For some, there may be frustration and grief associated with infertility. For others, there may be uncertainty or joy (or both) associated with an unexpected pregnancy. For still others, there may be excitement about becoming a parent, in conjunction with extreme mood swings, constant worry and intrusive thoughts, or feeling sad and guilty that you are not bonding with your baby.
You are not alone, it is not your fault, and therapy can provide you with support during this chapter of life. Becoming a parent (even the idea of it) is a vulnerable space where the most tender of emotions are often felt-- the most beautiful and wonderful alongside the most challenging or even painful.
Perinatal and postpartum mood concerns are common, and treatable. 1 in 5 mothers and 1 in 10 fathers experience postpartum depression (statistic from Postpartum Support International). Other mood concerns, like postpartum anxiety, postpartum OCD, and even postpartum psychosis also exist. Some of these mental health concerns begin after the baby is here, and some start during pregnancy.
The perinatal and postpartum periods can often activate past wounds-- traumas, attachment insecurities, pre-existing mental health conditions. However, it is also an amazing window of opportunity to help our brains form new connections, and even heal from negative past experiences.
I have completed advanced training in mental health therapy for perinatal and postpartum mood disorders through Postpartum Support International and would be honored to walk alongside you as you navigate this new life phase.
